This is what cabbage looks like when you let it go to seed:).
This blog is my way of sharing tiny tidbits and moments around our hobby farm. Some tidbits may be informative while others are simply for humor. Enjoy!

Chicken Attacked...
Feeling happy!!! One of our red hens was attacked by a dog a week and a half ago or so... She had one external puncture, wouldn't walk (limped when she did), was panting, making gurgling noises, and had blood in her mouth... She is one of our sweetest hens and a great layer. So, I decided to bring her inside, bath her, and dress her wounds (just sprayed blue kote on the puncture site). I gave her tylan injections for 4 days just in case. She WOULD NOT eat on her own. I realized the panting meant she was in pain. So, everyday, for a week and a half, I crushed a half of an orange flavored low dose aspirin up, mixed it with raw egg, apple juice, electrolite paste, and yogurt. Every couple of hours, I forced a couple of syringes full of the liquid down her throat. The panting stopped and I didn't notice anymore blood in her mouth. She eventually started standing up in the bathroom and made small improvements each day... We let her back out with her flock today.. She was pecking around in the yard and seemed happy and in no apparent pain. She has a small limp (probably a broken bone somewhere), but she is okay and seems happy. Like I sad, no apparent pain anymore. So happy we decided to let her recoup and didn't cull her b/c we ASSUMED she wouldn't make it...
Chicken Popcycles
It has been so hot here, I decided to make chicken popcycles to help keep the babies cool, happy, and comfortable...

Animal Abuse
It certainly pays NEVER to abuse an animal... This morning, when I fly sprayed my horses, my lead mare (and bestie) came up behind the horse I was spraying. The horse I was spraying started turning. So did my lead mare, Ayla... Suddenly, it wasn't the horse that was being sprayed that was directly behind Ayla's rear. She was cocked and ready to kick. I started yelling, "Ayla, Ayla, Ayla." She realized it was me and not the horse, and quickly spun around so her head was facing me. Uggghhh... I am LUCKY she loves and trusts me. I could have been severely injured or killed...

A Roo in the Bathtub
Thankfully, our Roo is feeling much better. So much better, he hopped in the bathtub... Lol... I am just so happy he is feeling better and SOUNDING better. He is now clucking for the first time in so many days. His "cock-a-doodle-doo" still isn't perfect, but I am betting by tomorrow, he will be his old self. Will put him back out with the flock tomorrow after one more Tylan injection. Ordered Tylan powder and will be treating the entire flock on Tuesday (tomorrow) when it comes in.

Respiratory Infection
My favorite roo has a respiratory infection. He was acting drunk and falling down, not eating, couldn't "crow," and sounded congested (gurgling). Using 1/2 ml of injectable Tylan once per day for 5-7 days. He is already doing better (in day 2).

Chick in my Bra
Went out to the coop this morning and found a guinea/silkie cross that hatched. Silkie mom has been "mom" to three chicks that hatched 6 days ago and didn't want anything to do with the new chick. So.... What does a gal do??? OF COURSE I PUT HER IN MY BRA AND CARRIED HER AROUND LIKE THAT FOR 8 HOURS. Why not??? lol... She is now resting under a heat lamp in a box in our bathroom...

The damn horses ripped the t-posts and wire from around the tree we planted to add shade. Then... they ate it...... they have grassy pastures plus this dry lot with a round bale of hay. Arrghhh...

DEAD BIRD
Found a dead guinea hen in the coop this morning... Saw liquid chicken "poo" in the yard yesterday.. Am going to treat the entire flock with Corid and assume Coccidia is the culprit. Hoping this works........... I HATE losing birds:(.

Chloe's Abcess
Opened up Chloe's abcess and it's now draining. Wrapped up with an Intex pad and is soaking... Stinks to hi-heaven and will smell worse when I remove the wrapping after 24 hours, but is already better. She isn't limping as bad...
