Good Rain & Earth Worms

Don't get me wrong... I am so thankful the ground is finally going to have a chance to dry out. But... With all of the rain this year, we have a super healthy and abundant crop of earth worms. The chickens, guineas, and ducks are lovin' it!!! Wooo hooo!!! 

Earthworms, Night Crawlers, Red Worms

Just fed my earthworms a mixture of chamomile tea grounds, used coffee grounds, ground up egg shells, and some lettuce. Should make them happy....

Worm Poop, Aka, Worm Castings

Worm castings, or "worm poop," is a wonderfully rich and nutritious additive to gardens and potted plants. Worm poo doesn't burn plants but is safest used as a top dressing to prevent any root damage (in my opinion). When you water plants/gardens top dressed with worm poo, the nutrients soak down through the soil with each watering.

You may be wondering, "WHERE IN THE HECK DO YOU FIND WORM SHIT???"

You can buy it at many gardening centers for $10-15 dollars a bag, which is  CRAZY... Or... You can raise your own worms and collect their "poo," which is free:). Free sounds like a much better option to me!!!

Worm Bucket

Finally got fed up paying retail prices for worms... Yes... WORMS!

So... I decided to make my own small worm farm using compost our animals loving poop out daily. We let it "bake"until it is ready and it makes the MOST wonderful potting soil, etc...

Decided to use it for my little vermiculture experiment this time, however:). 

I bought one container of worms and let them wiggle their way down through the rich soil. I also dug up a few and added them to the bucket. I will let them do their thing for 60 days or so, adding things they will eat from time to time, and see what we have at the end of the 60 day period. 

I threw some cut boards over the top to keep interested animals out of my experiment. Plus, it adds some darkness to their new home.
